A new internet challenge is upon us, and Selena Gomez is taking part. It’s called the #SafeHandsChallenge, and it’s an initiative to educate people on the correct way to — you guessed it — wash their hands.
Selena, who was nominated by Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington, shared two videos on Instagram of herself washing her hands. In the clip, Sel makes sure to turn off the water so she doesn’t waste it, and soaps up. “I clearly wasn’t washing my hands the right way,” she shares in the video as she thoroughly scrubs her hands, including paying special attention to her thumbs and washing up for 40 seconds. (FYI: the CDC recommends at least 20 seconds for a solid hand-washing session; you can view their full guidelines here.)
While making a video of yourself washing your hands sounds silly and is a little awkward at first, Selena has fun with it. The singer-songwriter reveals that she’s staying at home with her dog and nana, and looks cute and cozy in a pink sweatshirt and loose waves. She also reveals that she had to redo her video “so many times,” but we think she rocked it. Selena ends her hand-washing how-to by using a paper towel to turn off the faucet, then using the same towel to dry her hands.
“I want to challenge three amazing, more powerful women … Gigi Hadid, Olivia Wilde, and my girl Cardi,” she says. As of the time of this writing, Olivia is the only one who has completed her challenge, but we can’t wait to see Gigi and Cardi tackle it. Other celebs, including Billy Porter, have been challenged too, so get ready to see the #SafeHandsChallenge all over your Instagram feed soon.
According to PopSugar, the #SafeHandsChallenge was created by the World Health Organization as a way to help raise awareness about essential precautions against the coronavirus. One of the best ways to protect yourself and others is to thoroughly and consistently wash your hands. The WHO even created a handy how-to poster to show you how to do it right, and it looks like Selena aced it. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have to go make a video of our own!
